At the very beginning of this book there was a box. Nobody knew what was in it except Bernie. When Bernie opened the box he knew what it was. It was a parrot and a stinky dog. And Sherman is trying to get Bernie's pets so they can go somewhere else. So the plan is to turn the dog into a student, but it didn't help. He got to keep it anyway.
